You find the latest fotos from Moldova and Romania in the foto-page...

Some stories are soon to follow. I am now on my way to Livov in western Ukraine - a heat wave has hit the country and 37 degrees celsius in the shade, I am sweating my soul out.

By 11 o'clock yesterday I already had drunk 4 litres of water. I also beat my own ice-cream eating record, the score is now up to 6 delicious ukrainian ice creams in one day !!

At the Black Sea

After hundreds of kilometers cycling against a headwind, crossing the steppe with its huge fields and acres, suffering under a merciless sun, I have reached the Black Sea. My plans change a lot lately so I decided not to cycle to Kiev but go south to Nikolaev and Odessa instead and afterwards visit the tiny country Moldova before crossing the Carpathian Mountains in Romania.

And believe it or not, little wonders keep happening on this trip: Gleb, a guy from Odessa read the blog post my friend Artem wrote (about meeting me on the road) and spontaniously invited my to stay with him while in Odessa. We had a great time talking and wondering around this beautiful city, visiting the famous Potemkin Steps and the harbour, having dinner at Glebs dads Datscha. Thanks so much for the hospitality, Gleb ! See you soon in Ukraine !

On the 9th of may, 65th memorial day for the victory of the soviet armed forces over Nazi Germany, I got up early and left the little town of Lubny in eastern Ukraine around 7 o clock in the morning. By noon I had cycled nearly 50 kms and was crossing the village of Petrovka where the memorial celebration was in full swing...

One week ago I reached Ukraine, since then the sun has been shining every day, up to 30 degrees Celsius - I cycle in  shorts and T-shirt along quiet roads batteling a headwind in the countryside of eastern Ukraine heading south west towards Odessa. I pass little villages with colorfull houses, the chickens run free and the goose heard their youngsters along the road to the next pond.  Little blond girls ride bicycles to the village shop, old babushkas sit on the bench in front of their houses and watch me rolling by, looking in wonder. The dogs seem to be tired and don´t feel like chasing me. I fill my water bottles at small wells - just have to throw the bucket in, listen to the noise of chain ratteling and water splashing - to the right there is the handle to wind the full thing back up again.
In the fields, you can see whole families working side by side, ploughing, putting seeds into the grounds, on the bigger fields huge tractors move the earth and create a cloud of dust that s blown quickly over the plains.
The trees are green again and the first bright blossoms can be seen. Each morning I wake around 5 to the song of a multitude of birds and a choir of frogs. Around 8 it is already to hot to stay in the tent. So I go about my business, cook chai, eat some bread with cheese, an apple and get on my bike to cycle with the sun in my face towards southern Ukraine - Odessa and the Black Sea are waiting for me.
